LFM guidelines

The Landscape Fire Management guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for effective decision-making in fire prevention, mitigation, and response efforts.
The Landscape Fire Management guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for effective decision-making in fire prevention, mitigation, and response efforts. Derived from workshops in Banja Luka, these guidelines address key challenges in landscape fire management:
  1. Fire Safety Education: Start fire safety education in the curriculum from a young age to instill responsibility for the environment.
  2. Education Integration: Integrate fire prevention education into formal curricula to promote responsible behavior and environmental consciousness.
  3. Media Engagement: Collaborate with media to reach a broader audience for fire prevention campaigns.
  4. Awareness Campaigns: Launch media campaigns to educate citizens about preventing fires and reporting potential hazards.
  5. National Fire Protection Program: Develop and implement a program for forest and open space fire protection, including risk assessments and emergency response strategies.
  6. Early Warning System: Invest in modern technologies and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping for real-time fire risk data.
  7. Integrated Fire Statistics: Establish a coordinated system for forest fire statistics from data collection to analysis.
  8. Land Management Authority: Create a dedicated body for agricultural land management to promote responsible practices.
  9. Enhanced Oversight: Improve inspection and oversight processes to identify fire hazards promptly.
  10. Interagency Collaboration: Encourage collaboration among institutions and neighboring regions for more robust fire management.
  11. Training: Provide regular training for fire management personnel to equip them with the latest techniques.
  12. Data Sharing: Facilitate data-sharing agreements among institutions to enhance cooperation.
  13. Regional Cooperation: Strengthen cooperation between neighboring areas to allocate resources efficiently and respond faster during emergencies.
  14. Legislative Changes: Address deficiencies in legislation regarding fire prevention and firefighting units’ organization and sanctions for causing fires.
  15. Consistent Execution: Ensure consistent execution of fire protection measures and better coordination with firefighting units.
  16. Additional Forces: Activate additional forces with equipment during high fire danger situations, as per the Fire Protection Plan of Republic of Srpska.
These measures aim to enhance the landscape fire management system, reduce wildfire risks, and protect valuable ecosystems and communities. Cooperation, standards, and protocols are crucial for effective landscape fire management in disaster risk reduction and civil protection.
